Phlebotomist (Part-Time)

Position Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for assisting physicians by collecting blood specimens and any other specimens requested, while obtaining and distributing lab test results accordingly.

Responsibilities
  • Assists physicians in a prompt and organized manner by answering the phone in the lab and entering physician’s orders through the computer.

  • Maintains workflow by obtaining specimens in a timely manner so that other lab techs can perform their duties accordingly. Knows proper tube order of draw. Assists with therapeutic phlebotomy and fingerstick. Helps with specimen processing as needed.

  • Ensures that physician receive comprehensive lab results from outside labs as requested by completing and distributing lab requisitions as needed

  • Ensures that patient charts are kept up to date in terms of current lab results by faxing and mailing lab reports to appropriate destinations

  • Maintains inter- and intra-departmental workflow by communicating with staff at the front desk and communicating with other lab techs relating to test orders

  • Assist in maintain organized patient flow throughout the office by guiding patients to the correct department after the appropriate specimens have been drawn

  • Maintains supply inventory for the lab by providing assistance when ordering supplies when they are needed

  • Maintains a clean and sanitary lab by careful handling of all specimens, especially obtaining, transporting, and storing them and also packing up biohazard garbage for incineration

  • Assists patients by directing any questions or issues they might have regarding insurance coverage to the Billing Office

  • Preserves quality service by following organizational standards; Maintains patient privacy by keeping all information found in patient files confidential; HIPAA compliant

  • Participates in CAP Testing.

  • Understands diagnosis codes for proper ordering and insurance coverage.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned based on patient and business needs.

Required Skills
  • Minimum of (1) year to three (3) years of prior experience performing venipuncture

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, lab procedures, and lab equipment (i.e. centrifuge, needles, slides), required

  • Ability to perform venipuncture and other lab procedures

  • Ability to gather relevant data especially insurance information

  • Proficiency with computer systems (i.e. Microsoft Office, electronic medical records, lab computer systems)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, required

  • High level of organizational and time management skills; with ability to multi-task within a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to comfort and accommodate patients

  • High level of customer service / customer focus
