Medical Technologist

Position Summary

Assists physicians with the accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing test procedures on blood specimens, analyzing test results, and distributing the results to physicians accordingly. 

Education and/or Experience
  • 4 year degree including 1 year of clinical rotation through an affiliated hospital: a registry exam administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) must be passed.

  • 1-2 years as a generalist; exposure to abnormal hematological disorders (including observing abnormal cell structures microscopically) and phlebotomy experience is also beneficial.

Essential Duties
  1. Adheres to laboratory regulations and guidelines relating to quality by verifying and executing quality control procedures and quality assurance, while also participating in proficiency testing and reviewing Levy-Jennings charts. 

  2. Assists Doctors and Lab staff members by performing phlebotomies and bone marrow procedures as needed. 

  3. Ensures operation of lab equipment by performing daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and calibration activities. 

  4. Assists in arranging for test procedures by preparing reagents and lab tools and equipment that will be used. 

  5. Assists in maintaining organized patient flow throughout the office by guiding patients to the correct department after the appropriate specimens have been drawn. Provide a warm and friendly environment for patients. 

  6. Navigates and accesses multiple computer applications (including LIS and EMR) as needed.

  7. Assists in providing patient care by correctly administering lab tests and obtaining timely results so that physicians can review them and thereby prescribe chemotherapy or related treatments, maximizing patient satisfaction.

  8. Determines specimen integrity by making decisions regarding whether results are normal and accurate, what results warrant immediate attention, which specimens need to be redrawn, and which patients should receive testing first.

  9. Participates in continuing medical education as required by position.

  10. Performs other tasks as required.  

  11. Preserves quality service by following organizational standards.

  12. Maintains a safe and healthy work environment by following organizational standards and legal regulations.
